Our sensorial limitations has pushed us into the preference for illumination which led us to overlook the importance of natural darkness in ecosystems. Light pollution is overwhelmingly overlooked in urban spaces. Humans have a preference for illumination and have overlooked the importance of darkness.

We also find the literature, to often classify or to associate the light with knowledge, truth, and goodness, while darkness can represent mystery, the unknown, and the evil.

The right balance of light and darkness is important in photography too. The darkness is needed and iis as important in the photography realm to protect the photosensitive materials for being overexposed. It acts as a barrier against of the harmful light. In contrast with our own believes darkness is not harmful in photography. It might not create a photographic environment but is not destructive.

Our own senses limit our understanding of the world, and this has led to an under appreciation of darkness. In a way it makes me think of the Plato’s “Myth of the Cave”.

The conversation about the relationship between humans and nature, and the impact of technology on the natural world needs to expand. We should strive to connect with our nature.
