I’m trying to understand the energy of Thames river. So I will try to write down my thoughts, as coherent as I can.
The river, like the world itself, it is a paradox. It possesses the life-giving power that nourishes the land, yet simultaneously has the force of erosion and destruction. It marked Londons existence historically, culturally and politically by being the river of hope, the river of despair, the river of suicide, the river of literature but also the river of politics and the river of trade as Peter Acroyd described it.
The water is ideally reflective, the river Thames with its muddy looking it casts grimy reflections. Metaphorically, it reflects my eroding memories of my childhood.
The River Thames is the silent witness of London historys. It has a great influence on me too. I’m trying to understand my connection or obsession with its flow, movement and energy.
The dialogue with myself is similar to the way the water energy flows through the river trying to escape the man made concrete embankments. Perhaps im trying to escape from my own embankments seeking understanding and development.
Time flys. Time is a one way motion, from the past to future, similar as water flows downwards seeking the least resistance. What it will be in the future is a relation of what it was and what it is now.
My drives. Drive Is the description of need or the urge to go into one direction. I identify with my drives. Causality is the power of my drive so I can carryon moving forwards. Events are caused by other events, to which they flow, similar to the water in the river Thames.
I started the work on the River Thames over one year ago uncertain of the purpose. By accident I made the first photo of the water of the river splashing against the watermans stairs.
I see the photographs I make on the river Thames as the sounds of instruments in a concert. I still need to find tune it and find that ritm and synchronisation. It’s the relationship between the inner me, the River Thames, the embankments, my walking along the river, and the apparatus of photography allowing the reflection of the river, with its history, moods, flow and energy to be registered on my camera sensor.
